Adam Lambert: The gay man’s Madonna?

So the flamboyantly gay “American Idol” star Adam Lambert kinda went full-on homoerotic at the American Music Awards Sunday night. And unshockingly, it wasn’t as well received in Topeka as it was in West Hollywood. Imagine that…

During a performance of the title track for his debut album — which I won’t be purchasing — Lambert:

  • Made out with his male keyboard player.
  • Dragged a female dancer around by the ankles.
  • Pushed a male dancer’s head into his crotch and simulated oral sex.
  • Walked around a pair of male hoofers like dogs on a leash.
  • Thrust his hips at every opportunity amidst S&M-heavy imagery.

Hey, live and let live, I say. Whatever this dude wants to do in his bedroom is not my business. But it’s not really what I signed up for when I tuned in to watch — all I’m sayin’. The west coast broadcast of the show cut out the simulated oral sex, which is ironic considering that is the only part of the country that didn’t mind it so much.

For his first single to promote his first album, Lambert might have toned it down a little since we were all already quite aware of which team he plays for. Can’t you just see the choreographer at rehearsals screaming, “That wasn’t GAY enough!” at everyone? Even my gay friend Todd told me this morning that the AMA performance was a bit much for him.

I wonder if, like so many of us, these entertainers live in their own bubble of self-awareness and begin to imagine that everything that happens in Hollywood is what normal life is like for folks in Elsewhere, America. Here’s a hint: It’s not. Hit the road sometime and find out how the other half lives. That goes for the other half, as well.

Lambert was crying double standard this morning, noting that anyone who objects is “engaging in a form of discrimination… Women performers have been pushing the envelope… Female performers have been doing this for years — pushing the envelope about sexuality — and the minute a man does it, everybody freaks out. We’re in 2009 — it’s time to take risks, be a little more brave, time to open people’s eyes and if it offends them, then maybe I’m not for them. My goal was not to piss people off, it was to promote freedom of expression and artistic freedom.”

What do you think, fellas? Is this dude just a man-gay version of Madonna kissing Britney Spears on stage or is any PDA sickening? Are you ready for gay entertainers to spill out of the closet and into your living room? If you are confident in your sexuality, why feel so threatened?
